Dongyang, China has a history dating back to 195 AD and was formerly known as Wuning. In 688 AD, the name was changed to Dongyang, meaning “Eastern Sun.” It is approximately 5 hours by train from Shanghai, where it is also possible to catch a long-distance bus.

Dongyang is also known for the Lu Residential Complex, which is one of its historical and cultural sites, and the famous Hengdian World Studios know as the “Hollywood in China.” Today, Dongyang is known in productions of magnets, chemicals, plastics, garments, agriculture ,and wooden sculptures.

1. Hengdian World Studios



Hengdian World Studios is a film studio located in Hengdian, a Chinese town in the city of Dongyang, Zhejiang Province. It is the largest film studio in the world and the largest movie studio in Asia. It know as the Hollywood of Asia since it consist of 13 shooting bases and numerous buildings. It is also recorded and known to have a huge Buddha statue for use in the largest scale indoor studio and many films and tv shows have been filmed here.

This is a must-visit spot in Dongyang.

2. Hengdian Riverside Scene at the Pure Moon Festival

This site is one of the beautiful and artistic studio sets that compose the Hengdian World Studios. This was constructed for the shooting of the historical film “Dunhuang.” It serves as a re-creation of the famous Song dynasty painting, “Along the River during the Qingming Festival.” The site is full of ancient structures depicted in the renowned scroll painting and some wood carving. You can visit and explore the site on-foot, and if you are lucky enough, you may witness a movie being filmed during your tour.

3. Menghuangu Theme Park

Menghuangu is an amusement park in Dongyang that offers many different attractions for all ages. The indoor venues and mini aquarium illustrate natural events like torrential rains and volcanic eruptions. There are also lit flowers that really amaze all visitors. There is a lot to see here. The reason everyone enjoys this theme park is that there is no need to worry about distance, since every attraction, either indoors or outdoors, can be easily reached on foot.

4. Palace of Ming and Qing Dynasties

This palace is a replica of the famous imperial palace in Beijing and is considered a park/museum and it also puts on shows, so tourists can enjoy the culture and history. Do note that most things are only in Mandarin Chinese, so you might opt to hire an English speaking tour guide for you to understand what the show is all about and to translate some of the description written on the walls in Chinese. Brace yourself because you’ll be walking to see this site as well.
