Winter in Oxford

Oxford has cold and somewhat humid winters, and between December and February, there might be about 8 days of snow or rain. However, it’s quite the sight to see the university town snowed in, and I think it might just look straight out of a fairytale!

Places to go on a winter walk

  • Port Meadow: Situated by the shores of the Thames, this park will transform into a veritable winter wonderland when it snows!

  • Oxford Covered Market: Want to get out of the snow but still be surrounded by Christmas cheer? This place will serve you best! Seasonal goods will be available here if you want to shop, or head into one of the eateries for some hot food.

Christmas traditions in the UK

Christmas is a big deal in the UK and has similar traditions like most other Anglophone nations, such as illuminating cities with Christmas lights and, of course, the Christmas tree. There are a few unique traditions as well:

  • According to Great Britain’s official tourism board, London’s main Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square is traditionally gifted by the city of Oslo, Norway, in thanks for British support in WW2.

  • Christmas jumpers are iconic to the UK’s festival season, and I’m pretty sure they’ll make for great souvenirs! According to the BBC, they’ve become quite normalized as part of the festive season nowadays, a far reach from its earlier gaudy connotations. I’d love to get one of these fun jumpers!
