Manhattan is one of New York’s leading destinations for elegance, hospitality, and entertainment due to its vast size and vibrant culture. Begin your vacation by visiting widely renowned sites such as the Top Of The Rock, which provides an excellent vantage point from which to properly appreciate the Empire State Building. If you enjoy art, you’ll love the art galleries and museums scattered across the area, such as The Museum of Modern Art. One of Manhattan’s most renowned features is Central Park, which can be enjoyed in all four seasons. Of course, a visit to Times Square will allow you to feel the soul of New York City. Manhattan is unquestionably New York’s most recognized and visited borough. For excellent stays, check out the best serviced apartments in Manhattan, New York City, below.
Tip from tour guide
Traffic in Manhattan can be very hectic, but a new congestion pricing program is in place to help with that. Before booking your stay, take a look at some key details of the program:
The New York Congestion Pricing Program went into effect on January 5, 2025, to reduce pollution and congestion from vehicles entering Manhattan. Now, if you're driving to Manhattan, you have to pay a toll fee when you enter Manhattan’s Congestion Relief Zone, which consists of the local streets and avenues below 60th Street. The program is expected to generate 15 billion USD in long-term funding for the MTA’s current Capital Plan. I think this is a great initiative as it will help fund station elevators for people with disabilities, improve accessibility, expand the Second Avenue Subway Line, upgrade train signals, and launch new electric buses and high-tech subway cars.
Let me break it down for you below:
Tolls for passenger cars:
- 9 USD (peak hours): 5 am - 9 pm (weekdays); 9 am - 9 pm (weekends)
- 2.25 USD (off-peak)
Taxi and rideshare surcharge (paid by passengers):
- 1.50 USD per trip (taxis and for-hire vehicles licensed with the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission)
- 0.75 USD per trip (taxis, black cars, and green cabs)
EZ-Pass crossing credits (peak hours; no crossing credits are offered overnight):
- Up to 3 USD for passenger vehicles
- Up to 12 USD for large trucks/tour buses
- Up to 1.50 USD for motorcycles
- Up to 7.20 USD for small trucks and charter buses
Discounts and exemptions:
- Low-income drivers (discounts)
- People with disabilities or vehicles transporting people with disabilities (exempt)
- Emergency vehicles (exempt)
- Specialized government-owned vehicles (exempt)
E-ZPass and Tolls by Mail:
Use your E-ZPass tags to pay the Congestion Relief Zone toll as you do to pay tolls on other roads, bridges, and tunnels. Those without an E-ZPass tag will receive a Tolls by Mail bill to the registered owner of the vehicle. Tolls by Mail bills are more expensive and less convenient to pay. You can sign up for an EZPass on EZpassny.com. If you already have an E-ZPass, make sure your current license plate is linked to your E-ZPass account. This will ensure you’re charged the E-ZPass rate. If your E-ZPass was issued by New York State, you can check the status of your account on the E-ZPass NY website. If your E-ZPass was issued in another state, you'll need to check the appropriate state's E-ZPass website.
