The biggest city in Nicaragua, Managua is a captivating destination in Central America. Near many sparkling crater lakes and situated along the southern shore of Lake Managua, this capital city offers a picturesque natural beauty mixed with pragmatic urban living of friendly locals and adventurous expats. It is filled with interesting landmarks, a lively dining scene, and a vibrant nightlife. Certain to grab your attention is Trees of Life, a public art installation with shiny metallic trees that can be viewed on almost every street in Managua. Though damaged by an earthquake in 1972, Old Cathedral of Managua, which features a beautiful gilded Neoclassical facade, is still a top attraction in the city. To learn about the country’s rich past, visit National Palace of Culture. If you want to discover more, you can explore lovely neighborhoods. Check out where to stay in Managua, Nicaragua, including the best neighborhoods.

Awash in shaded green spaces, Los Robles is the safest area for foreign visitors. It is an upscale neighborhood where middle-class Nicaraguans and a significant expat community resides. You’ll find several parks in Los Robles such as Altamira Park and Japón Nicaragua Park, a tree-lined Japanese-inspired park that provides a serene walking path, a beautifully maintained basketball court, and a fun mix of playgrounds and playscapes for kids. If you’re a shopaholic, the must-visit place is the expansive Metrocentro Mall. The neighborhood showcases a multitude of delicious eateries, fine hotels, lively cafes, charming shops, and important embassies. Boasting indoor and outdoor exhibits, Galería de Arte Contemporáneo Códice is a great spot for art lovers who want to admire compelling, edgy artworks.

2. Las Colinas (from USD 25)

Just 13 miles (21 kilometers) away from Augusto Cesar Sandino International Airport, Las Colinas is a secure gated community where some long-term expats live. Though not as centered on the city’s action and activities as Los Robles, it offers a tranquil environment if you’re seeking refuge from the hectic energy of Managua. It does not feature a lot of eateries and attractions that are within walking distance, so keep this in mind if you’re more of a partygoer and someone who wants to be close to the dazzling nightlife scene and prime tourist sites. If you do decide to check out the city’s extracurricular activities, the neighborhood is near Carretera Masaya, one of the city’s main thoroughfares, so you will have easy access.

Las Colinas is 1.4 miles (2.3 kilometers) or a 5-minute drive away from Managua.

Located 14.5 miles (23.3 kilometers) away from Augusto Cesar Sandino International Airport, Santo Domingo is a distinguished neighborhood where many of Managua’s elite live. To a degree, this neighborhood is considered quite fashionable, and its allure is the result of well-endowed residents. If you do have an impulse to shop, the grand Metrocentro Mall is just 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) away. However, Plaza Viejo Santo Domingo and Galerías Santo Domingo are neighborhood malls that offer a wonderful shopping excursion: they feature a great selection of local and international stores and a food court that serves a variety of tasty fare.
